LESSON 5

The victim's room: one visitor

Mae's Detective School · Detective Starter Kit (10 free cases)
Rule 3 is the heart of every case. The murderer is the one person alone with the victim.

Rule 3: the victim's room holds exactly two people, the victim and the murderer. Other rooms: any number.

So a square for the victim is out when nobody could join there, or when two people would have to be there. And once one person must be in the victim's room, everybody else has to stay out of that room.

When only one person can still join the victim's room, that person must be in it.

How to spot it

  • The victim has only a few rooms left.
  • A room that nobody else can still reach.
  • Two people who both can only stand in the same room.

Mae's tip

Check the victim's squares room by room: who could join there, and how many?

  1. Rule 3: the victim's room holds exactly two people, the victim and the murderer. So Hank needs a square where exactly one other person can join him. At A5, nobody could join him: nobody else can still stand in the Party Room. So Hank can't be at A5.
